WASHINGTON — It was a long time coming for the Washington baseball teams, but the Demons finally got on the board in the Southeast Conference standings.
Washington won a nail-biter, 5-4 in the Highway 1 rivalry on Monday, but Fairfield exploded in Game 2, winning 16-1.
The Trojans held a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth inning of Game 1, but Washington had their biggest output of the night with a five-run frame.
The Trojan defense had a couple of tough errors, combined with some clutch hitting from the Demons, who took a 5-4 2 lead into the fifth inning.
Fairfield scored two runs in the fifth, and then had a couple of big chances in the next two innings. In the seventh, Trojan speedster Tallon Bates was on first base with one out, but Caden Allison’s hard line-drive was snagged by Luke Beenblossom at short stop, and Beenblossom doubled Bates off at first to end the game.
“It was like, 'finally something went our way.'” said Washington head coach T.J. Rausch. “Finally, we had a play that benefited us, which was awesome.”
Luke Shiebel went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Demons. Nate Edmonds knocked one run in. Conner Leyden and Brady Krantz combined to hold Fairfield to just three earned runs.
Luke Konczal and Allison both knocked in a run for Fairfield. Bates ended the day 2-for-3.
Dain Burkhart pitched for Fairfield and gave up just one earned run. Four of the Demons’ runs were a result of Trojan errors.
“I think we weren't ready to play in Game 1,” said Fairfield head coach Josh Allison. “We had one really, really bad inning, which cost us the game. Fortunately, we bounced back in the second game.”
Indeed the Trojans did bounce back, and in a big way. Fairfield led 8-1 after three innings, and the Trojans put up an eight-spot in the fifth to put the game on ice.
Allison finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. Dain Burkhart went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Landon Nodurft went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Aidan Kreuter picked up the win for the Trojans on the mound. He gave up one earned run on five hits, while striking out six batters.
Washington’s lone RBI came from Blayze Richardson in Game 2. Five different Demons shared time on the mound, with Cole Vetter being tagged with the loss.
