INDEPENDENCE - For the second-straight week, the Washington football team played a ranked opponent, and thinks went a little rockier for the Demon offense.
After an offensive battle with Mid-Prairie last week, Washington was shut out for the first three quarters at 10th-ranked Independence, falling 45-7 in a Class 3A non-district clash.
Washington’s defense kept it in the game for the most part, as Independence put up just 13 points in the first half and eight more in the second, but that 21-0 Mustang advantage grew to 31-0 after three quarters.
Washington’s only score of the game was an 85-yard bomb from Kael Williams to Liam Roberts in the fourth quarter.
Williams went 11-for-20 for 139 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions throwing the ball. On the ground, Williams ran for a team-leading 49 yards.
Roberts caught three passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. Carson Brown caught four passes for 26 yards, and Nic Stone caught three passes for 17.
Williams finished with nine tackles to lead the team. Clayton Evans had seven tackles, and Aidan Schmitz finished with 5.5.
Washington is now 0-2. The Demons will finally play at home in Week 3, hosting Burlington (2-0).
