WASHINGTON — The Washington Demon baseball team opened Southeast Conference play on Monday night with back-to-back loses to Burlington, despite holding early leads in both.
Burlington defeated Washington 8-3 and 9-4 in the SEC slate.
In the opener, the Demons jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning and held it through three innings. Washington did well defensively through the span to limit any sort of Grayhound offense, but things shifted in the following frame.
Burlington responded with a decisive fourth-inning rally, scoring all eight of its runs to hand the Demons their first conference loss.
Mitchell Zieglowsky, Boden Brown, Luke Schiebel and Cole Vetter each tallied a hit for Washington. Runs came from Blayze Richardson, Nate Edmonds and Kael Williams.
Game two followed a similar script. Washington built a 3-1 advantage by the third inning, but Burlington once again delivered a blow midway through.
This time, the Grayhounds scored seven runs and the Demons couldn’t get back into it.
Conner Leyden had a strong showing at the plate, collecting two hits and scoring twice. Ethan Peebler added two RBIs and scored one run. Brown chipped in a hit and run of his own as well.
With the loss, Washington opens Southeast Conference play 0-2 and moves to 1-4 overall.
Washington will look to bounce back with a matchup against Mt. Pleasant on Thursday.
