WASHINGTON — The Washington boys soccer team gave it their all against defending-Southeast Conference champion Fort Madison on Monday, but in the end, the Bloodhounds had just enough to stay undefeated.
The No. 8 Demons were upended 2-1 by the No. 3 Bloodhounds in a matchup that looks to play a huge role in the 2023 SEC race.
Things looked bleak early for the Demons as Fort Madison scored the first two goals of the game, one by Xander Wellman and one by Jacob Shottenkirk, to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Washington would strike back, as Emanuel Raymundo scored an unassisted goal in the second half to cut the Bloodhounds’ lead in half.
Unfortunately for Washington, the Demons couldn’t equalize the game. Despite Washington beating Fort Madison 12-7 in shots on goal, the Bloodhounds escaped with their perfect record in tact.
“It was a tough match, but I'm proud of how our team played together and possessed the ball,” said Washington head coach Sally Hart. “Our defense stepped up and slowed down their attack.”
Brayan Arreola led Washington with three shots on goal in the loss. Joshua Perez, Kelver Lopez, Raymundo and Fredy Aguilar each had two.
Will Gilchrist-Brock had a nice night in net, saving six shots.
Washington is now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Demons will host Fairfield (1-2, 0-2) on Thursday.
