FAIRFIELD - Despite scoring first against Southeast Conference foe Fairfield Thursday, Washington High School lost a boys soccer match 3-1.
The score was tied 1-1 at halftime but the Trojans netted two goals in the second half for the victory.
The Demons scored first when Fabian DeJesus, a freshman forward, found the net.
'I got a good pass and tried to tap it past the goalie,” DeJesus said. 'I've taken shots like that before and it barely goes in, but there was no doubt about that one. I just wish we got the dub.”
Washington coach Sally Hart saw some good things from the Demons.
'We've been working with a strong group of guys and focusing on possession and making sure we control the ball as much as we can and not being reactionary to the other team,” she said. 'I think that's why we were able to get that first goal, unfortunately, we didn't get any others. We got some nice looks, we just need to start finding the corners of the net.”
Fairfield's Eli Moore got a pass from Juan Rojo with about 10 minutes left in first half.
'I was making a run to the outside and as I was cutting in and saw a ball right between the two center backs and put it right in the middle and their center back tried flipping it up and it went over his foot and I had an easy tap in,” Moore said.
Moore gave Fairfield a 2-1 lead when he scored his second goal midway through the second half.
'Landen Schafer passed the ball through to Nick Frisbie and Frisbie had a hard shot and it went off the post and no one was really reacting and I just went in for an easy tap in to the left side,” Moore said.
Isaac Rosales got Fairfield's third goal with around five minutess remaining in the game.
'I saw the open space in the middle and Leone (Gichure) cut outside and got the ball and we made eye contact and he passed the ball to me for a tap-in goal to the left side,' Rosales said.
'It's very frustrating how we start games,” said Fairfield head coach Feliston Guezimane. 'The first goal was a complete meltdown in the back and I don't know how they let that ball in. They're not focused and we've been struggling with it all season and we keep starting games very, very slow and aren't concentrating and then we have to climb back. I told them to stop doing that because we found out Monday that it doesn't always work like that.”
Fairfield lost to Mt. Pleasant 4-3 Monday.
Washington is 2-3 and 1-1 in the conference. The Demons host Iowa City Liberty Tuesday, hoping to avenge an 8-0 loss from April 1.
'We need to get some guys healthy before then,” Hart said. 'Our bench isn't very deep right now and that doesn't help us when you're running for 80 minutes straight.”
Fairfield is 4-3, 2-1 SEC.
