WAUKEE — It was bound to happen, and it was the reason Washington girls golf coach Len Kull takes his team to the big tournaments in the big city for big competition.
The Demons did not win this 18-hole tournament hosted by Waukee Monday at the Beaver Creek Golf Club, but teams from Ames, Ankeny, Ankeny Centennial, Dowling Catholic, Johnston, Marshalltown, Mason City, Ottumwa and Southeast Polk all finished behind Washington, a Class 3A school. Class 4A West Des Moines Valley shot a 315 team score, and Washington shot 330. Van Meter, a 2A school, was third with 367.
“There was definitely some nerves, but I was real pleased with how the girls responded,” Kull said of finishing second. “Some had a tough start but showed a lot of character in how they responded.”
Amber Henson of Marshalltown was the medalist with a 73, and Anna Nacos was the runner-up with a 74. Washington teammate Kiki Bruner was sixth with a 77. Josie Tanner carded an 85. Kaylin Long and Makenna Conrad both shot 94.
Washington hosts Fairfield, Keokuk, Mt. Pleasant and Burlington Thursday.
