BURLINGTON - The Washington High School girls basketball team scored a crucial Southeast Conference win Friday over the Grayhounds, 46-44, with a great fourth-quarter comeback.
Washington took an early lead and won the first quarter 16-13. The home standing Burlington team rallied for a 24-22 lead at halftime. Burlington outscored the Demons 15-9 in the third quarter for a 39-31 lead going into the fourth quarter where Washington's 15-5 advantage resulted in the two-point win.
'We did a good job of battling back from a 11-point deficit in the second half,” Washington coach Shannon Rugg said. 'In the fourth quarter, we got a lot of stops to get back in the game. We held them to one point scored in the last five minutes of the game while we scored 11.”
Anna Nacos led the way for the Demons with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting that included 3-of-8 3-pointers. She also had two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
'Anna and Halle Leyden forced a turnover with under a minute to go to and Anna scored a layup and got fouled to give us the lead,” Rugg said. 'Burlington called a timeout with 5 seconds to go. Kinsey Duwa forced a turnover on the in bounds play and Halle dribbled out the last few seconds.”
Olivia Pacha added 10 points and six rebounds for the Demons. Addison Six produced nine points, three rebounds and two assists. Kinsey Duwa had four points, three rebounds and three steals while Kellie Dallmeyer produced two points, four rebounds and two assists.
'Kinsey did a good job of adjusting to a new wrinkle on offense that really opened up the inside,” Rugg said. 'I though Six and Pacha did a great job of sealing their girl off and we found a way to get the ball to them.”
