Demons get 3 wins over weekend

CRESTON -- Washington High School played four softball games to end last week, two Friday and two Saturday and came away with three wins.
The only loss was to Class 4A No. 9 Burlington 6-3. The Demons then won their next three, taking a 11-2 win over Creston in five innings, a 12-1 six-inning victory over Central Decatur and a 5-0 triumph against Clarke.
Molly Sparks pitched the loss, but allowed just one earned run, no walks with five strikeouts and nine hits. Alexa Mitchell batted in two runs with a first-inning single. Kaitlyn Mitchell plated a run with a single in the second inning. Kinsey Duwa had a hit to start the game. Burlington scored three runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Against Creston, the Demons scored four in the first, two in the third and five in the fifth. Cara Linnenkamp allowed an earned run on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Kaitlyn Mitchell and Halle Leyden each connected on a triple and had three RBI. Sparks was 2 for 3 with two RBI.
Sparks went 4 for 4 in the 12-1 win as the Demons piled up 13 hits. Kellie Dallmeyer and Duwa had two doubles apiece. Linnekamp was 3 of 4 with a double. Alexa Mitchell gave up four hits, one walk and fanned five.
Linnenkamp tossed the shutout with five hits, one walk and three whiffs. The Demons had just four hits (Duwa, Dallmeyer, A.Mitchell and K.Mitchell) with kaitlyn Mitchell knocking in two runs.
The Demons now have a record of 11-7 play at Davis County (5-6) Tuesday, then host Southeast Conference foe Ft. Madison Thursday.
Highland at 6-5
The Huskies played three games at Calamus-Wheatland Saturday, defeating Clinton 6-5, but falling to Northeast 13-1 and Camanche 5-3.
Mackenze Hora, Jenna Sands, Abbi Stransky, Sarah Schneider and Aly Stokes all had two hits apiece in the win. Megan Hoenig fanned four without a walk as the winning pitcher. Grace Batcheller did not allow a hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
Kayla Cerny, Stransky and Abbie Miller provided the only hits against Northeast.
Hoenig struck out six, walked four and gave up eight hits against Camanche. Emily Yahnke and Schneider had two hits, but Miller connected on a three-run homer for the Huskies' runs.
Highland hosts Iowa Mennonite today.
