FORT MADISON — Schaeffer Memorial Golf Course in Fort Madison played host to the 2023 Southeast Conference golf meet on Wednesday, and all eyes were on the Washington Demons.
After winning every regular season SEC meet, Coach Collin Stark’s group looked to close out the league slate with a win at the tournament, and they did just that. Washington shot 302 to take home the SEC title.
The Demons ousted 2022 champion Burlington by 23 strokes to win the championship. The Grayhounds, who didn’t play in any SEC spring meets, couldn’t keep up with a Demon squad that had four players shoot 80 and under.
Reigning SEC champion Roman Roth made it two straight with a tremendous final stroke total of 70, which won the meet by two strokes. The Demon junior shot a 33 on his front nine to open up a four-stroke lead, and added 37 on his back nine.
Roth’s two freshman teammates were right behind him. Drew Conrad finished at 75, for third place. Rajan Roth shot 77, for fourth.
Teague Mayer was Washington’s fourth scorer on the day. He shot 80 even. Luke Beenblossom finished at 83, and Isaac Vetter shot 87.
Fairfield took third overall, shooting 334 to finish nine strokes behind Burlington.
The Trojans were led by Max Weaton, who shot 80 to tie Mayer for seventh place.
Dev Eisner finished the tournament with an 82 for the Trojans. Sam Weaton shot an 83. Landon Nodurft ended at 89. Nile Christensen shot 91, and Austin Lisk finished at 107.
2021 SEC champion Nick Matheney took sixth overall to lead Mt. Pleasant to a fifth-place finish. Matheney shot a 79 on the day, and the Panthers ended with a total stroke total of 370.
Teammate Nate Dismang wasn’t too far behind, shooting an 84 for the Panthers’ second score. Reece Coffman finished out at 91. Izaac Zihlman shot 116. Bean Meador ended at 121, and Grant Willham rounded out the Panthers with a 123.
The Demons, Trojans and Panthers will all be together again next week, when Washington hosts the Class 3A boys sectionals, which will take place on May 10.
