Coaches always have a unique way of looking at things. Although the Washington High School wrestling team lost to Davenport Assumption 48-27, Demons head coach Brent Van Weelden saw the loss as a positive.
'We forfeited four matches so we wrestled them in 10 matches and we won six of them,” Van Weelden said. 'We got beat but I think we held our own. Assumption is a great team. Right now, they have a better team and we would like to change that.”
The Demons defeated Mediapolis 60-21 in their second dual of the evening.
In between the two matches, the nine seniors (Cade Pohren, Brennan Murphy, Walker Ikerd, Garrett Ikerd, David Hora, Tristin Westphal-Edwards, Logan Escher, Marshall Patterson, Tristan Allender) on the team and their parents were honored.
The most exciting match of the evening was an epic comeback by Matt Collett against Collin Wehr of Assumption.
Trailing 8-2, Collett won 10-8. He got a reversal for two points, a near fall for three, then was awarded three back points right before the buzzer ended the match.
'I am not sure that that was right or not,” Van Weelden said. 'They gave the points for the near fall, but he never really lost the hold before they gave three more again for the back points. We'll take it, though.”
Whether or not it was scored right was irrelevant to the coach because it was the effort Collett showed that was the focal point for Van Weelden.
'I was very proud of him, he did a great job of coming from behind. Matt had a lot of fight to come back and win, then he is behind in the second match and keeps fighting and gets those points at the end, even though he loses.”
Dillan Sanders also had an exciting match, winning by fall with a second remaining in the bout.
'Dillan wrestled extremely well,” Van Weelden said. 'The kid he wrestled was pretty dang tough. That was a tossup match.”
Van Weelden said the team wrestled better than in the three duals Tuesday.
'That is a plus. A couple of our guys need to get in better shape. The matches we won were from our experienced kids. Walker and Garrett, David and Tristan did well. That's what we want to see from the kids, wrestling hard the whole time. I was very pleased.”
As long as the Demons keep moving in that direction, they will be all right.
'Tristan did a good job going out in the last heavyweight match,” Van Weelden said. 'Him and Marshall are going to split time this weekend (when Washington wrestles five duals at Cascade). We want to get Tristan down to 220 in the second half of the season.
'It was good to see where our kids are compared to some other tough kids. It was a good night.”
