WASHINGTON — The district schedule isn’t getting any easier for the Washington football team.
The Demons get one of their toughest tests yet on Friday night, as No. 8 (3A) Davenport Assumption comes to town for a district matchup.
Washington is coming off a rivalry Homecoming win over Mt. Pleasant. The Demons took down the Panthers last week, moving to 2-4 on the year with the win.
Assumption comes into the game at 4-2. The Knights’ only losses were to now seventh-ranked (4A) North Scott in Week 3 and now fourth-ranked (3A) Mount Vernon last week.
Washington has continued to run a balanced offense this season, although the running game has went for the most yards. Sophomore Kael Williams has almost hit the 500-yard mark, rushing for 476 yards and seven touchdowns. Quarterback Logan McDole has rushed for 331 yards and three scores.
Wide receiver Mason Morgan continues to do work in the pass-catching game, going for 281 yards and four touchdowns so far this year. Morgan also got to show off the arm last week, throwing a 50-yard touchdown pass to McDole on a trick play.
Casen Evans continues to lead the Demon defense. The senior has now racked up 51 tackles on the year.
The Washington defense has four takeaways this year. Morgan has two of those, a fumble recovery and an interception.
Assumption’s offense has been buzzing this season, despite a hard schedule. Senior running back Angelo Jackson has been fantastic all year, running for 893 yards and 13 scores in the team’s first six games.
Assumption quarterback Jake Timmons has thrown for 1,044 yards and seven touchdowns this year, while only getting picked off twice. he has hit senior receiver Bauer Caspers for nearly half of his 78 completions, finding him 32 times for 452 yards and a pair to touchdowns.
Another senior, Dominic D’Aprille, leads the Knights in touchdown catches, with three.
This is the first game between Assumption and Washington since the 2017 season, when the Knights beat the Demons 45-28. Assumption also beat Washington 33-24 in 2015. The Demons took the 2014 matchup 45-27.
Friday night’s game could pay dividends in Class 3A District 4, which currently hosts four 1-1 league records, including the Knights and Demons. The winner of this week’s contest will, at least for now, be in line for a playoff berth.
Friday night’s game begins at 7:30 p.m.
