WASHINGTON — Fairfield gave Washington a little trouble on the softball field on Monday night, but the eighth-ranked (3A) Demons are still perfect.
Washington took Game 1 13-3 and then held on for a 10-6 victory in Game 2.
“I think this group is just different,” said Demon head coach Ben Obermann. “We have a great opportunity to do something special this year.”
Fairfield had an early 2-0 lead in Game 1, but the Demon offense came roaring back, scoring six in the second, two in the third and five in the fifth to end the game two innings early.
Alyvia Anderson continued her tare, going 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Ella Greiner knocked in two. Leighton Salazar, Emery Walton and Colbie Greiner all knocked in one, and Greiner finished the game 3-for-4.
“We just try to be competitive each and every game,” Anderson said. “Even when we get down, we just try and get back and get those runs up.”
Bell Salazar had a solid outing in the circle, giving up just three runs (one earned) over five frames.
In Game 2, Washington saw a 9-4 lead get cut down to 9-6 thanks to some timely hits from the top of the Fairfield lineup. The Trojans had the bases loaded and only one out, but the Demons escaped the jam.
Bella Salazar and Walton each knocked in three runs for Washington. Leighton Salazar collected three hits.
Colbie Greiner and Halle Cuddeback combined to give up just six runs (five earned) in the circle.
The game sent Washington to 16-3 overall, as well as the 8-0 conference record. Fairfield is 3-13 overall and 0-8 in conference play. The two teams will play in Fairfield on Thursday night.
