WILLIAMSBURG - The Washington, Mid-Prairie, Iowa Mennonite and WACO high school boys track teams competed at the Raider Relays Monday.
'We used the meet as a workout and ran people in some distances that they weren't used to,” Washington coach Steve Roth said.
The strategy paid off in the 4x800 meter relay, which the Demons won with a time of 8 minutes, 41.5 seconds with Justin Simmering, Evan Horak, Mitchell Driscoll and Ethan Hunt.
'That's the time we ran at state last year,” Roth said. 'Driscoll and Hunt are 400 guys but I think it was fun for them. Nobody complained anyway.”
Lincoln Kleese, Ben Schifer, Spencer Sotelo and Cade Hennigan ran the shuttle hurdle in 1:04.37 to take third. Kleese's split was in the 15s.
The 4x1 was third in 46.03 with Hennigan, Jacob Miller, Sotelo and Turner.
Kleese was second in the long jump at 18 feet, 10.5 inches. Luke Turner was sixth in the 100 in 12.25. Schiefer was sixth in the 110 high hurdles in 17.38.
The 4x2 team of Hunt, Driscoll, Wyatt Stout and Cade Pohren was sixth in 1:37.75. The 4x4 was sixth in 3:40.11 with Simmering, Schiefer, Hunt and Driscoll.
Mid-Prairie's Quinn Schmidt was second in the 800 with a time of 2:06.67. Miles Burrows was second in the 400 hurdles in 1:00.53.The 4x2 was second in 1:35.36 with Elmir Ganibegovic, Grant Boyse, Clarke Latchem and Aiden Rath. The sprint medley team of Latchem, Boyse, Ganibegovic and Schmidt was fourth in 1:40.51. Brad Tornow, Spencer Yutzy, Thaddeus Shelter and Burrows ran the the 4x8 in 9:08.4 to place fourth. Schmidt, Ganibegovic, Burrows and Boyse were fifth in the 4x4 in 3:39.39.
Micah Gugel was fifth in the discus at 129-8. Jack Baker was sixth in the shot put at 44-3. Justin Schwatz, Baker, Luke Albright and Micah Hostetler were sixth in the shuttle in 1:17.36. The distance medley was sixth in 4:12.51 with Issaac Boucher, Josh Wallington, Baker and Yutzy. Tornow was sixth in the 1600 in 5:17.85.
WACO's Colton Horak won the 400 hurdles in 59.46. Elijah McGowan was sixth in the 400 in 56.01.
Iowa Mennonite's best finish was Aaron Hershberger in the 400 hurdles. He was ninth in 1:05.53.
