Demons, Panthers, Trojans battle in Grinnell
Union area big schools collect two wins apiece in weekend tournament

All three of the Union area’s big schools were in Grinnell on Saturday as a field of 11 teams battled in an early volleyball clash.
Washington, Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield all had similar results. Each team brought home two wins from the tournament.
The tournament saw the first clash of the year between Washington and Mt. Pleasant, and it was a good one. The Panthers jumped out first, beating the Demons 21-10 in the opening set. Washington battled right back to dominate the second set 21-6, and the Demons held off the Panthers 15-12 in the decider.
Washington’s Leighton Messinger had eight kills to lead the Demons against the Panthers. Ella Greiner finished with seven.
Washington’s other win came 21-15 and 21-17 against East Marshall. Messinger had eight kills in that win.
The Demons fell in straight sets to West Liberty (21-19, 21-14), Urbandale (21-8, 21-15) and South Tama (21-17, 21-14).
Mt. Pleasant scooped up a pair of three-set wins. The Panthers beat East Marshall 22-20, 17-21, 15-9, and fought out a 21-17, 23-25, 15-12 victory against Iowa Valley.
Along with their loss to Washington, the Panthers also fell to Clera Creek-Amana (21-8, 21-3) and Dallas Center-Grimes (21-11, 21-10).
Fairfield’s two wins on the day came mvia the sweep. The Trojans topped Grinnell 21-17, 21-11, thanks in part to seven kills from Lilly Bergren and 13 assists from Maddie Jones. They swept Iowa Valley 21-17, 21-11 behind six kills from Bergren and five from Terrell.
Fairfield fell in a couple of heartbreakers against Carlisle and South Tama. Carlisle nipped the Trojans 21-12, 19-21, 15-9, and South Tame pulled out a 15-21, 21-14, 15-11 victory.
