WASHINGTON — The Washington girls basketball team had only beaten rival Mt. Pleasant once in 15 tries coming into Friday night’s Southeast Conference clash, but the Demons turned it around in a big way with a 26-point victory.
Led by a scoring barrage from sophomore Adalyn Long, Washington ousted Mt. Pleasant 66-40 for their second conference win.
“It's always nice to get a win, and when it's the Panthers, it's a little extra nice,” said Demon head coach Shannon Rugg. “I'm just happy for the kids. They've worked extremely hard this year.”
The Demons were on fire right away. Washington exploded from beyond the arc, hitting shot after shot to run out to a 22-4 advantage.
Mt. Pleasant would cut the Demon lead to 22-11 after one quarter, and a scrappy Panther squad continued to make strides throughout the opening minutes of the second.
“I just kept telling the girls, we had to chip away, chip away, chip away,” said Mt. Pleasant assistant coach Aimee Iverson, who stepped in for an injured Curt Watson. “They had a good first couple of minutes and kind of rattled us, but I thought we responded well.”
Washington regained control midway through the second quarter, and as the game went on, the Demons would never let the Panthers back in it, leading 40-20 at halftime and 53-34 after three quarters.
Long hit five 3-pointers in the game to lead the Demons. She finished the night with a game-leading 25 points.
“I haven't had very many fall yet,” Long said. “So it felt good.”
Lauren Hinrichsen scored 12 points for the Demons. Kendall Hinrichsen scored 10. Addison Miller put up six. Jacey Berg scored five. Sadie Van Der Molen finished with four. Taylor Bartholomew had three, and Maci Williams scored one.
Mt. Pleasant’s Kynlee White put up 11 points to lead the Panthers. Abby Carthey scored nine. Juliana Burns scored eight. Paityn Ensminger finished with four. Alexa Fuller and Myah Starr scored three each, and Addison Peck had two.
Washington fell 65-29 to Williamsburg on Saturday. The Demons are now 5-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Mt. Pleasant fell to 1-7 on the year and 0-3 in the SEC.
