After the biggest weekend of the Union area's high school football season, there is just one team left standing in the Cedar Rapids Gazette/KGYM Radio/Southeast Iowa Union football poll. Washington, one of the area's big winners last weekend, held on to its No. 10 ranking after a thrilling 64-61 win over Mt. Pleasant in the final regular season game.
The Demons were one of eight Class 3A teams who held onto their ranking after Week 9. The only switch in the 3A rankings was Cedar Rapids Xavier leaping over Solon for the No. 2 spot.
After spending the last handful of weeks in the Class 1A rankings, Sigourney-Keota was pushed out after a 28-6 loss to Mediapolis.
Sigourney-Keota, ranked No. 9 in last week's top 10, was one of two teams who dropped out of the rankings this week. Iowa City Regina, the No. 10 team also dropped out after falling 42-10 to No. 1 Dike-New Hartford.
Mediapolis jumped into the rankings, at No. 10. Underwood slid in in the No. 9 spot to replace S-K.
New London, a formerly ranked team and a Class 8-Man playoff team, didn't garner any votes this week.
Washington and New London's first round opponents, Western Dubuque and Don Bosco, both went wire-to-wire, holding No. 1 spots from the preseason rankings on in Classes 3A and 8-Man respectively. Class 2A's Waukon and Class A's West Hancock also went wire-to-wire at No. 1.
