BURLINGTON — What looked to be Washington’s biggest threat in the 2025 Southeast Conference softball race is now all but vanquished after yet another Demon victory on Monday night.
No. 11 (3A) Washington went into Burlington on Thursday night and finished off the season sweep of the defending conference champions, taking out the Grayhounds 12-3. Washington would lose 11-3 in non-conference action to No. 4 (4A) Carlisle one night later.
The Demons went into Burlington having swept a doubleheader at home against the Grayhounds earlier this season, and they weren’t about to let the defending champs get back into the race.
Washington jumped on the Grayhounds with three runs in the first, four in the second and two in the third to get out to a 9-3 advantage, and that was plenty enough to get the job done, especially with Bella Salazar pitching well in the circle.
“When we get an early lead, it allows our pitchers and defense to play more relaxed and free,” said Washington head coach Ben Obermann. “Bella challenged hitters and let her defense work.”
Burlington had three runs in its first two at bats, but wouldn’t score at all after that. Meanwhile, Washington added three more in the top of the fifth, and ended the game via the eight-run mercy rule.
Alyvia Anderson was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs in the win. Leighton Salazar went 3-for-4 with three RBIs of her own. Ella Greiner was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Colbie Greiner went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Bella Salazar knocked in one run.
In the circle, Bella Salazar threw five innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks, while striking out three batters.
The Demons had a rough start the next night against fourth-ranked (4A) Carlisle. The Wildcats scored six runs in the first inning and at one point led the game 9-0. Washington was never able to get back into it.
The loss to Carlisle snapped Washington’s five-game losing streak, but the Demons are still 17-6 overall, with a 9-0 conference record.
