FAIRFIELD - Washington High School competed in the Brookhart-Crew Relays Monday.
The Demon boys took fourth while the girls were fifth.
Both of the Demon coaches approached the meet differently than most events for a couple of reasons, with the main one being that the Southeast Conferece meet will be Thursday at Fairfield.
The Brookhart-Crew meet is usually run on a Tuesday, but was moved to Monday because of the conference meet being the same week.
'We changed a few things ups to see how some of the younger kids could do,” girls coach Stefanie Haworth said.
'My philosophy was just to run the top guys in an event or two to keep them fresh for conference and recover from Drake Relays,” boys coach Steve Roth said. 'We moved some guys areound and it worked out well.”
The boys had nine season bests in eight events: Spencer Sotelo won the long jump at 20, 7 inches; Kael Adam was third in the discus at 132-10.5 and Marshall Patterson was sixth at 125-11; the sprint medley of Cade Hennigan, Jacob Miller, Ethan Hunt and Mitchell Driscoll was third with a time of 1 minute, 36.38 seconds; the shuttle hurdle relay's time of 1:02.36 with Lincoln Kleese, Sotelo, Ben Schiefer and Hennigan; Kleese was second in the 110 highs in 15.57; Evan Horak was third in the 1600 meters in 4:45.29; Sotelo, Luke Turner, Miller and Hennigan in the 4x1 in 44.68 were third; the 4x4 in 3:32.88 won with Ethan Hunt, Justin Simmering, Turner and Driscoll.
'Kleese has confidence and he is improving his speed in the highs,” Roth said. 'The 4x4 was our best time by far. We ran the young kids in a lot of different things to see what they have.”
With the state-qualifying district meet May 9 at Mt. Pleasant, Roth is concerned with the quality of the events, not how many the athletes run.
'Being a conference champion is important, but making state is more so,” Roth said. 'We'll run our best guys in everything the next two weeks.”
Some Demon girls ran their best with Washington victories in the 100 (Jenah Greiner at 12.8), 200 (Isabel Bailey in 28.21) and the 400 (Ashley Telleen in 1:05.54). Bailey also placed third in the 100 at 13.29.
'Jenah Greiner ran well (Monday) night,” Haworth said. 'She had huge (personal records) in both the 100 and the long jump.”
Greiner won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet. Bailey was fifth at 15-6.5.
Telleen was second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:12.51.
Telleen, Bailey, Elyse Hunt and Greiner were third in the 4x4 with a time of 4:35.96. Victoria Hinson, Liaden Fillinger, Chloe Telleen and Ellie Anderson took third in the 4x8 in 12:01.61.
'We were without Leah Marek as she was at a scholarship event and Kelsey Pacha has a strained groin, so we were without those two,” Haworth said.
