It was a beautiful Monday afternoon, and the Washington boys? track team took full advantage.
The Demons traveled to West Burlington for the Falcon Relays as they look to continue building in the young track season.
?It was an outstanding night, and the best night we?ll have all week from the way it sounds,? Washington boys? track coach Steve Roth said. ?We took advantage of it and did some good things and scored some points. We hadn?t practiced since Wednesday. We didn?t have school (on Monday) and everyone showed up. We are getting in shape, and we are going to be going hard until we get over that hump.?
The Demons took fifth in the Class A portion of the meet, with 11 top 10 individual finishes on the night.
A pair of those finishes came from sophomore Brennan Horak, who took fifth in the 3200 meters and seventh in the 1600.
?He just got back from Florida at 1 o?clock, so he had some lag on him, and it?s all about conditioning with him right now,? Roth said. ?He?s going to be good in those. That?s what we need.?
Another pair of top 10 finishes came from senior Michael Ellingson, who took third in the high jump and fourth in the 400-meter dash.
?He had a great run, but we just have to get him to be able to run two,? Roth said. ?With the time we?ve had (early in the season), we?ve been trying to get him up in the high jump. To get fourth in the 400 is awesome, but we need to have him crank that out in the 4x400 as well.?
Caleb Bex finished in fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, while Bryce Rickey and Ryan Reighard took eighth and ninth respectively in the 100-meter dash
Kyle Schindler took seventh in the 200-meter dash, followed by Tanner Murphy?s ninth-place finish in the event, while Sean Zimmer took 10th in the 800-meter run.
Murphy took ninth in the long jump on the day, while Mark Engelken finished in 10th in the discus.
In the relays, Washington retooled a couple of their teams, and posted third-place finishes in the 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays. With much of the season still ahead of them, Roth knows things will continue to change in the relay teams.
?There will be different relays again on Thursday,? Roth said. ?We have to find the four that fit together. We moved Kyle Schindler around and had him anchor a few, but he wasn?t happy with his times. He knows he?s faster than that. I?m not displeased with times, but we have to work on things like handoffs and that kind of stuff.?
The Demon boys will be in Mt. Pleasant on Thursday, while the Washington girls will take part in the girls? portion of the Falcon Relays on Tuesday afternoon.
