FAIRFIELD - Washington completed a sweep over Southeast Conference rival Fairfield on Friday. The Demon girls basketball team started the night with a 53-29 win over the Trojans. The boys team followed suit with a 57-39 victory.
Adalyn Long outscored all players in both games, leading the Washington girls team with 21 points, all in the first half. She scored the Demons first eight points and buried three 3-pointers from the left wing in the opening quarter.
Long usually prefers to do damage from deep on the right side of the court. But the senior rarely passes up an open look, making Fairfield pay each time she was given room to shoot on the left side, even from a few steps behind the 3-point line.
“I think we moved it really well and we got it inside” Long said. “That left me wide open on the wing.”
Long finished the half with five made 3s. Her fifth make came at the halftime buzzer to give Washington a 34-14 lead.
Washington didn’t get complacent after the break. It held Fairfield to just two points in the third quarter. The Trojans scored 13 in the fourth with the game comfortably in hand for Washington, but combined for just 16 points in the first three periods.
"Defense always has to be there," Demons coach Colin Mulford said. “You can't play the score, it's really easy to do that. We want to stay at our level of basketball for 32 minutes. We don't want to have peaks and valleys. We might have peaks and valleys with shooting, but that effort and energy and that defense should always be level at all times."
Long led the way for Washington on both ends, pairing five steals with her 21 points. Junior Sarah Berdo and sophomore Reagan Miller each logged eight points off the bench for the Demons, who saw nine players score Friday.
Washington also dominated on the glass with 40 rebounds, including 16 offensive boards. Leighton Messinger and Addison Miller finished with eight rebounds each. Vivienne Kroll grabbed seven. Berdo and Reagan Miller had five and four rebounds, respectively.
“Just felt really good to get a win after a two-game skid,” Mulford said. “The girls played really hard, shot really well and they just encouraged each other and it was great to be around.”
Despite Fairfield’s struggles against Long’s makes from deep, the Trojans held Washington to just five points in the third quarter. Coach Brian Witzenburg praised the Demons for their first-half shot making, but remains encouraged by his own team’s effort despite the large deficit.
“Tonight was probably our best second half of the season as far as continuing to compete,” Witzenburg said. “We have to continue to compete to give ourselves a chance in any game.”
The Trojans were limited themselves in the third and couldn’t cut into the Demons lead. In the fourth, they were able to work the ball down low to senior Elyse Setterstrom, who led Fairfield with 11 points. Junior Emma Metcalf chipped in six points and four steals off the bench. Fairfield forced 14 Washington turnovers defensively.
On the boys side, Washington’s Drew Conrad came two points shy of Long’s total. The senior led the Demons with 19 points in their 18-point win.
“When they’re in man, I think we just win a lot of those matchups,” Conrad said. “So when they went to man, I just tried to take my guy 1-on-1.”
Conrad helped Washington generate a 12-2 run to close the first half. The Demons held just a 17-15 lead with four minutes left but broke the game open with a surge of scoring.
Washington didn’t cool off when it came out of the locker room. It scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 37-17 lead, which it protected the rest of the way.
“All of a sudden that’s a 20-2 run from the end of the half and the beginning of the half,” Washington coach Collin Stark said. “That’s what’s going to win you basketball games.”
Both Conrad and junior Nic Stone achieved season highs in scoring. Stone racked up 17 points and made three 3-pointers.
Rajan Roth scored seven points for Washington. Tate Greiner had six. Kael Williams and Aidan Schmitz each scored four.
Stark said he’s hoping to see Washington continue to improve its consistency and sustain stretches like the four minutes on either side of halftime Friday. Conrad’s scoring and Stone’s hot shooting from 3 also present promising signs for the Demons moving forward.
“We’ve got a good collection of guys that know their roles,” Stark said. “Once we get everything clicking, I think, kind of like tonight, you’re going to hopefully see those glimpses become three and four quarters of that.”
Fairfield’s inability to contain Washington’s shooting and stop the bleeding in the middle portion of the game put the Trojans in a hole. Their own struggles from long range negated the opportunity for a comeback.
The Trojans shot just 30.6% from the field. They made just 2 of 20 attempts from 3-point range and had 20 turnovers in the home defeat.
“We’ve got to get better defensively, and then we continue to make silly mistakes on offense,” Fairfield coach Nathan Perkins assessed. “When you don’t execute offensively and you play poor defense, it’s really hard to stay in basketball games against a team that’s got a bunch of kids that have been playing since they were freshmen.”
Fairfield was led by Ethan Bisgard. The junior set a new season high with 14 points and added two rebounds and an assist.
Eli Zillman was the only other Trojan in double figures. He recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and added one assist and a steal.
Jeremy Parker scored six points off the bench for Fairfield. Nolan Smith had three points. Spencer McCready, Luke Thornton and Axl Starr each scored two.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do, but they’ll keep getting better,” Perkins said. “They’re a mature team and they’re smart and they know what they’ve got to do. They’ve just got to put it all together. They look good in practice. They’ve got to put it together on the floor.”
Washington girls basketball improved to 3-2, while the boys team is 3-1. Both teams are 1-1 in SEC play.
Fairfield dropped to 1-3 on the boys side and the girls team fell to 1-5. The boys team is 1-1 in SEC play and the girls team is 0-2.
Washington’s game against Grinnell tipped off after press time Monday.
