WASHINGTON — Washington baseball dropped a pair of Southeast Conference ballgames on Thursday night against the Bloodhounds of Fort Madison.
The Demons had a productive night at the plate, but the Bloodhounds even more so as Washington fell 12-5 in game one and 16-10 in the nightcap.
Fort Madison was scorching hot from the opening pitch and a handful of Washington errors favored the Bloodhounds scoring outburst.
The Bloodhounds brought 13 batters to the plate in the first inning alone and took and early 8-0 lead.
Each team traded blows the rest of the way, but the Demons could never make up the deficit.
Washington got one run back in its half of the first, but Fort Madison took an eight-run lead, 9-1, once again in the second with a single run.
The Demons scored three between the third and fourth, but Fort Madison matched it with a three run fourth inning bringing the score to 12-4.
The fourth marked the final scoring inning for the Bloodhounds, but the Demons brought just one more run home the rest of the way.
Ethan Zieglowsky led the Demons with three hits and one RBI in the loss. Lucas Kroll also had a pair of hits and RBIs as well. Ethan Patterson, Avery Six and Matt Wolf each had hits as well. Six also finished with an RBI.
Kole Williams, Avery Six and Tim Willits all pitched for Washington.
Williams threw for 0.2 innings, allowing four hits, eight runs, three walks and one hit by pitch. Six threw for 4.1 innings, allowing nine hits, four runs (one earned) and one hit batter. Willits threw for two innings, giving up two hits with one strikeout.
The start of game two was a complete turnaround for Washington.
In the first two innings, the Demons jumped out to a 6-1 lead.
Kroll and Zieglowsky delivered an RBI single and double in the first to make it 2-0. In the second, a single by Patterson loaded the bases for Kroll who hammered a three RBI triple. A wild throw to second moments later and the Demons held a five run advantage.
Fort Madison started to chip away in the third, scoring two runs to make it 6-3. The Demons were quick to answer back with a pair of their own in the fourth to extend the lead to 8-3 going into the fifth.
Both teams went scoreless through the fifth, but the game was flipped on its head as the Hounds scored six in the sixth to take their first lead of the game, 9-8. Washington scored two in the bottom half of the sixth, but Fort Madison put together its best scoring inning of the game with seven total runs in the seventh to down the Demons.
Kroll paced Washington with three hits and five total RBIs in the loss. Patterson and Williams both had two hits each. Williams along with Zieglowsky had one RBI.
Zieglowsky, Ajay Six, Luke Beenblossom, Austin Rebling and Willits all threw from the hill.
