WASHINGTON — The Washington basketball teams welcomed in the Tipton Tigers on Monday night for a non-conference girl-boy doubleheader. Both Demon teams fell just short.
The Demon girls dropped their game 39-34. The boys followed with an even closer loss, falling 60-57.
“I think our defensive effort was outstanding,” said Washington girls coach Shannon Rugg. “Offensively, it was a lot better. We attacked the basket more than we did on Friday night. It's just one of those things where we've got to keep grinding.“
The Washington girls played strong defense early on, but couldn’t get their offense going. Tipton led 7-2 after one quarter, 16-11 at halftime and 25-19 after three.
Washington could never grab the lead in the final eight minutes, and fell to 3-8 overall on the season.
Lauren Hinrichsen led the Demon girls with 13 points. Adalyn Long had 12. Addison Miller finished with four. Sarah Berdo and Kendall Hinrichsen each scored two, and Vivienne Kroll finished with one.
“I think shooting wise, Lauren is one of the best shooters we have,” Rugg said. “Hopefully this gives her some confidence.”
The Demon boys were down 31-25 at halftime and 50-40 after three quarters, but came back to tie the game late in the fourth.
Logan McDole took the ball to the rim with 3:15 showing on the clock, which at the time knotted the game up at 54-54. Tipton, however scored the next five points to lead 59-54.
Drew Conrad hit a 3-pointer with just three ticks left, which had Tipton lead’s back down to 59-57. The Tigers went one-of-two at the free-throw line, allowing the Demons a shot to tie it up at the buzzer, but McDole’s deep inbound pass to Conrad was picked off and Tipton survived.
It was the latest in a long line of shaky first halves for the Demon boys, who have made a habit of staging fourth-quarter comebacks so far this season.
“We can't keep getting ourselves in holes and expect to win,” Demon boys’ coach Collin Stark said. “It's unfortunate because I felt like if we played the way we're capable of for maybe 10 of the minutes, it would have been a different basketball game.”
McDole finished the night with 13 points. Conrad had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. Seth Shepherd scored 10 points to give the Demons three double-digit scorers.
Nic Stone had eight. Conner Leyden and Luke Shiebel each scored five. Kael Williams finished with two points and four assists, and Oliver Hobscheidt ended with two points.
The Washington boys fell to 5-5 with the loss.
