WEST BURLINGTON - Two area high school boys track teams were in action Monday.
Washington took second in Class A of the Falcon Relays and Highland was sixth in Class B.
'It was a good night to run, a little chilly but it was a good night,” WHS coach Steve Roth said. 'Finishing second is not a big deal to us but we will take it. We had a lot of kids score, got a lot of medals. ”
It was especially good for the Demon 800-meter sprint medley team, which set a meet record in the first race of the night. Cade Hennigan, Jacob Miller, Spencer Sotelo and Mitchell Driscoll ran the 100, 100, 200, 400 race in 1 minute, 40.02 seconds to break the Mediapolis' record that was set two years previous of 1:40.51.
'Driscoll ran a good anchor,” Roth said. 'It was good to see.”
Driscoll took third in the 200 in 23.75 and Jacob Miller was sixth in 24.88.
Ethan Hunt placed second in the 400 with a time of 53.47.
'Hunt had a great first 200 but we need to get him in shape,” Roth said. 'He's not where I want him yet, but that's understandable.”
Hunt ran the opening leg of the 4x4, which finished second in 3:41.58. Driscoll ran second, then Justin Simmering and Ben Schiefer at anchor.
The shuttle hurdle was second in 1:12.1 with Lincoln Kleese, Schiefer, James Medrano and Hennigan.
Hennigan, Miller, Sotelo and Luke Turner ran to third in the 4x1 with a time of 46.45.
Cade Pohren, Brandon Dickel, Wyatt Stout and Trevor Quigley were third in the 4x2 in 1:41.11.
The distance medley team finished second in 3:57.69 with Pohren, Turner, Michael Kimball and Simmering.
'All of our field events scored points, which we tried to do last year but just never did,” Roth said.
Stout matched his best high jump from last year, going 5-8 for second place.
'For this early in the season, that's great to see,” Roth said.
Kleese finished fourth in the long jump with a personal best leap of 19 feet, 3.5 inches.
Sam Hall put the shot 42 feet for third and Marshall Patterson was sixth at 38-4. Patterson was fifth in the discus at 121-10 and Kael Adam was sixth at 118-5.
Kleese finished second in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.55.
'Kleese ran a good hurdles race,” Roth said. 'It was a good time for this early.”
Evan Horak took third in the 3200 with a time of 10:57.82 and fifth in the 1600, running a 5:09.17. Lance Sobaski was sixth in the 800 in 2:34.63 and sixth in the 3200 in 11:48.3.
Washington's boys and girls run at Mt. Pleasant Thursday. The girls run today at West Burlington.
Highland's 4x200 finished second in 1:39.41 with Connor Grinstead, Trey Lasek, Mason McFarland and Kadin Jepson.
Bryce Waters, McFarland, Jepson and Trey Lasek were fourth in the 4x1 in 48.8.
Trey Lasek was fifth in the 100 in 12.04.
Grinstead's long jump of 17-5.25 was second. Zack Lasek took third in the shot put with a toss of 40-11.5 and teammate Bradley Rodgers was seventh at 38-7. Zack Lasek was also third in the discus with a distance of 117-0. Jacob Roling took sixth in the long jump at 13-8.25.
Highland's sprint medley team was sixth in 1:46.26 with McFarland, Trey Lasek, Jepson and Bryan Redlinger. Redlinger was sixth in the 1600 in 5:37.49.
Both teams ran at the Steve Roth relays Thursday in Washington.
'Two meets in four days hurts them a little bit,” Roth said. 'If it was in the 50s or 60s instead of the 40s it would have been better. We moved some people around and it was good to see what they did.”
