WASHINGTON — For the Washington girls basketball team, Monday’s matchup against Williamsburg marked the end of the regular season.
It was a tough go for the Demons as they were bested by the Raiders 46-35 after a hard fought bout.
The Demons and Raiders were separated by less than five points for two quarters in their matchup.
Washington and Williamsburg exchanged baskets through the opening quarter and the Demons held the advantage heading into the second 6-4.
In the second period, it was much of the same.
After trading blows once again through the second, Washington was able to create some separation with just over three minutes to go.
The Demon’s Alex Murphy scored two to make it 15-10.
After Williamsburg cut it back to three with a two of its own, 15-12, Murphy added another two to bring it back to five, 17-12, with under a minute to go.
The Raiders were able stunt the Demons momentum though as Carly Rich dropped in a three with under 10 seconds to go to make it a two point game at the half, 17-15.
In the third, Williamsburg found its stride.
Right out of the gate, the Demon’s Kaylin Long buried a three to push it back to five, 20-15.
Quickly the Raiders answered with a two and a three to tie it up at 20.
For Williamsburg, that was the start of the three point barrage.
Washington went up 25-23 with a deuce from Leighton Messinger, but a two from the Raiders tied it up once again at 25.
The Demons wouldn’t score again the rest of the quarter.
In the meantime, Williamsburg ended the quarter with four straight threes, the last of which was at the buzzer.
The Raiders hit six from deep in the third period.
Heading into the fourth, Washington trailed 37-25.
Washington looked to rally in the final fourth.
Adalyn Long drilled a three to start the quarter, followed by four points from Murphy to give the Demons a 7-0 start to the quarter and bring the game to five, 37-32.
That would be as close as the Demons would come.
Williamsburg followed with three straight points and Messinger dropped in another three with 4:02 to go to make it 41-35, but Washington wouldn’t score again the rest of the way out.
The Demons (7-12) will take on Davenport Assumption (11-8) on Saturday in the Class 3A Region 2 opening round.
