FAIRFIELD — Washington and Fairfield went down to the wire on Friday night in the pair second meeting of the season.
Winning the night was the Demons, who defeated the Trojans 56-52. Washington completes the season sweep of Fairfield.
It was a tightly contested game throughout.
Washington controlled the early stages of the game, thanks in large part to senior forward Logan McDole. The Demons jumped out to an 8-1 lead through the first four minutes.
The Demons went up by as much as 10 in the first quarter before a three by Riley Perkins ended the first quarter at 15-9. McDole scored nine of the Demons 15 points in the first period.
Fairfield turned it up a notch in the second. The Trojans put together a lopsided 18-4 run through nearly five minutes. Eli Zillman capped off that run with a emphatic and one dunk to give the Trojans what was their largest lead of the night at 27-19.
Washington didn’t let it get out of hand. While Fairfield dominated for the majority of the frame, the Demons ended well.
In the final two minutes of the game, Washington outscored the Trojans 8-3 with a pair of threes coming from Nic Stone.
At the half, the Trojans led 30-27.
Fairfield continued to hold the lead through nearly seven minutes of the third quarter, but once again Washington picked it up late.
With Fairfield leads 39-33 with just over a minute to go, the Demons hunkered down giving up just one field goal to the end of the quarter. Meanwhile, they scored eight points themselves to tie it going into the final period, 41-41.
In the final frame, Fairfield built another slim lead. The Trojans went up 46-41 in the first minute, but a pair of threes from McDole highlighted a 10-0 Washington run to the 2:53 mark.
With 1:47 remaining, the Trojan’s Lucas Konczal cut the Demon lead down to one, 51-50, with a pair of free throws. They got it within one once more at 53-52, but it came down to the stripe and Washington delivered.
Washington hit five free throws within the final 50 seconds.
Logan McDole led the Demons with 23 points. Drew Conrad finished with 14 points and Nic Stone added eight.
For Fairfield, Riley Perkins had 22 points. Lucas Konczal scored 11 and Eli Zillman followed with 10.
