FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield football team had Washington dead to rights when the two teams met up last season. The Trojans led 20-0 in a game that at the time had major playoff implications, but Washington stormed back to stun the Trojans 35-28.
Now, one year later, a new-look Fairfield squad is looking for revenge, while the Demons look to continue their domination of the Highway 1 rivalry.
Washington has been tested plenty over the past five years. The Demons had beaten the Trojans 17-14 the year before, and in 2018, Washington had to rally to beat the Trojans 24-22.
The Demons, in all, haven’t wavered very many times against any other Southeast Conference school when it comes to the sport of football. On Friday, the Trojans will try to change that.
Fairfield comes in 1-1, having already beaten one major rival in Mt. Pleasant. The Trojans beat the Panthers 38-14 on the road to start the season, cashing in on 236 yards and two touchdowns from running back Cason Miller.
The Trojans came into Week 2 riding high on defense after two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Fairfield picked up two safeties in a 21-14 loss to Fort Madison.
Tallon Bates has the only defensive touchdown for Fairfield so far this year, a pick-six against Mt. Pleasant.
The Trojans have gotten touchdown runs from Lucas Konczal in each of the last two games. Fairfield’s passing game hasn’t quite manifested through a pair of contests.
On the other side, Washington has been extremely balanced this year, throwing for 203 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 196 yards and a score.
Junior Logan McDole has performed well in his first year at starting quarterback. McDole has completed 15 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns, while getting picked off one time. He also leads the team with 112 rushing yards and a score.
Kael Williams has run for 84 yards and two touchdowns this season. Mason Morgan leads the receivers by a large margin, catching four passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns.
Casen Evans’ 11.5 tackles leads the Demons. Morgan has the team’s only two takeaways, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Like Fairfield, Washington comes into the rivalry game sitting at 1-1. The Demons lost 28-14 at Oskaloosa in the opener, but bounced back to beat Burlington 32-7 last Friday.
Friday night’s game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
