WASHINGTON — It was a dominant season for the Washington boys golf team, which won every single regular season meet in Southeast Conference play, but there was still some major work to be done headed into Wednesday.
The Demons defended the home course advantage at Washington Golf and Country Club, taking the SEC tourney by 28 points.
Washington finished with a final stroke total of 316, beating out second-place Fort Madison, which finished the tournament at 342. It was Washington’s third-straight SEC team title.
The Demons did all this without top golfer Rajan Roth, who has been out with an injury this month.
“I think it’s just guys stepping up,” said Demon head coach Collin Stark. “We would love to have him, but at the same time, it has created that opportunity for other guys.”
Cole Vetter and Drew Conrad were out ahead of everyone in the individual race. Vetter won the tournament, shooting 72, for his first SEC invididual title.
“I just felt like I couldn’t miss a shot today,” Vetter said. “Yesterday at practice felt really well, and I was just feeling myself today.”
Conrad wasn’t far behind. He shot a 74, putting two Demons below 75. Washington also had two of the only three sub-80 scores.
“A lot of people filled their roles, but it will definitely be a change when (Roth) comes back,” said Conrad after the meet. “He’ll hopefully be helping us advance through sectionals and districts.”
Washington put its four scorers in the Top-8, as Conner Leyden and Carson Brown each shot 85 to finish in a four-way tie for seventh.
Ethan Peebler shot an 89, to finish 14th. Kaleb Orr shot a 94, for 18th.
Mt. Pleasant took third place overall, shooting a 345, just three shots off second place. The Panthers were led by Merrick Lamm, who made the All-Tournament team with a fifth-place 82.
Sam Frary tied for seventh with an 85. Brody Engle shot an 86, for 11th. Alek Barton finished at 92. J.C. Sitar shot 93, and Logan Calhoun ended at 96.
Fairfield took fourth place, shooting a 357. Archer Kreuter finished sixth, with an 83, making the All-Tournament team.
Andrew Myers was the second Trojan in the Top-10, shooting 85 to finish in the tie for seventh. Luke Thornton shot a 91. Kanon McClarron, Voss Richardson and Xavier Kessel shot 98, 102 and 103 respectively.
The Panther, Demon and Trojan boys golf teams will now turn their attention towards sectionals on Wednesday. Washington and Mt. Pleasant will be back at Washington Golf and Country Club, while Fairfield competes in Knoxville.
