KEOKUK — A clutch fourth-quarter rushing touchdown by Kael Williams and a big pass breakup in the final minutes from Nic Stone helped the Washington football team pull out a wild 21-20 win over Keokuk in the final game of the season on Friday night.
Unfortunately for the Demons, it wasn’t enough to keep the season going.
Mt. Pleasant’s win in Fairfield mathematically took the Demons out of playoff contention, just as Washington was staging a major comeback, rallying from a 20-7 deficit to beat the Chiefs at Calvert Stadium in Keokuk, a win that could have still kept the Demons’ playoff hopes alive.
Williams rushed for 92 yards and the go-ahead score midway through the fourth quarter, while also throwing for 74 yards. Stone threw a touchdown pass to Williams in the game and then provided the late heroics, breaking up a pass in the end zone to keep the score at 21-20.
Caden Greiner rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown, while also catching one pass for 39 yards.
Defensively, Clayton Evans led the way with 15 tackles and a fumble recovery. Williams and Liam Roberts each had interceptions.
Washington finished the year at 5-4, winning every home game before picking up the team’s first road victory in the last game of the season.
The Demons finished district play 3-2. Washington finished behind Solon (5-0) and Mt. Pleasant (4-1).
