MEDIAPOLIS - With 26 minutes remaining in the second half of Wednesday's St. Louis Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference game against Fontbonne University, Iowa Wesleyan's Jaqueline Ivers seemingly tapped in a go-ahead goal. The score was waved off, and less than six minutes later, the Griffins flipped the script.
In the 70th minute, Fontbonne's Krystal Kohenskey found the net for the only goal of the game, and Iowa Wesleyan could never recover. The Griffins beat the Tigers 1-0, Iowa Wesleyan's first loss of the season.
'I think we just need to be a little bit more calm and trust in our ability,” said Iowa Wesleyan head coach Chris Gaskin. 'I think we got a little bit anxious, a little worked up, and it got us a little out of our game.”
The Tigers survived a fierce first-half wind that went right at Fontbonne's backs. Iowa Wesleyan had the advantage in the second, but the Griffin defense wouldn't let up.
Ivers' potential go-ahead goal came after Fontbonne goalkeeper Mary Bears was knocked over on the rush and left the net wide open. The official disallowed the goal, saying Beers had possession of the ball before she was knocked over.
After the Griffins scored the go-ahead goal, Iowa Wesleyan put together a couple of late rushes to try and tie it up, but the Tigers could never put forth the equalizer.
Despite the loss, the Tigers showed they were a real threat to the top of the SLIAC. Fontbonne defeated Iowa Wesleyan 10-0 last season, and the Griffins were picked third in the preseason poll, four spots ahead of Iowa Wesleyan. Gaskin says his squad isn't satisfied with a moral victory.
'I think we're a little disappointed to be honest,” Gaskin said. 'The effort was there. I think it's just the details now.”
The Tigers are now 1-1 on the young season. They will play at Eureka College on March 13.
