The FHS girls' soccer team scored two hat tricks Monday night at Dexter as the Trojans defeated Centerville 8-1 on an offensively-minded senior night.
'I'm really glad that they started connecting their passes and scoring goals the way I know they can,” said head coach Brittany Winslow. 'I just keep reminding them that we need to go out and play 100-percent, right away.”
The Captain
'The weather was better than expected and I just wanted to have fun and work together and show what we are made of,” said senior Bryanna Popejoy who scored three times, but not for her own glory. 'I wasn't doing it for me, I was trying to make a statement to the other teams that we can do this kind of damage.”
Popejoy scored in the 17th and 24th minutes of the first half and again in the eighth minute of the second half.
'The first one was a high cross from Hannah [Lyons] and I kicked it over and the goalie was really far out, the second Emily [McAvan] crossed it over and I was completely unmarked and it was just a little tap into the left corner and the third was a run up the middle of the field and I tapped it between the goalie and her outstretched arm.”
Three more
Junior Emily McAvan had her first career hat trick as well, although she had other plans for the night.
'I thought it was really cool, but tonight I wanted to make sure that Bryanna got her hat trick before I got mine,” explained the thoughtful striker. 'Tonight is about her.”
'I could tell she was making an effort to get me the ball,” agreed Popejoy. 'I really appreciate that.”
As for McAvan's goals. 'I don't remember the first one, but the second one I shot it and the goalie kind of blocked it and I crashed. She bobbled it and I was able to get a second shot off. The third one I got a pass from Bryanna [Popejoy] and I dribbled a couple of steps and slowly rolled it in.”
Penalty Kick Queen
Senior Kara Jeffrey is oftened called on to close out penalty kicks because quite frankly, she makes them just like she did Monday in the 11th minute of the first half.
'I just do what [Coach Winslow] told me to do from the start and that's to kick it to the top corner,” explained the new Trojan defender who joined the team this season at the request of her best friend, Bryanna Popejoy.
No. 8
Sophomore Clare Else netted her fifth goal of the year in the 15th minute, although she wouldn't have been sad if she scored me.
'I was running up the field and Emily [McAvan] gave me a beautiful pass and I finished it. End of story. I would have liked to score a few more, but I had a lot of fun today.”
Next
Fairfield will travel to Keokuk on Monday with three of their final four games on the road, sans a visit from Washington on May 16.
No. 21 Clare Else, who scored a goal of her own, runs alongside junior No. 3 Emily McAvan who also had a hat trick, the first of her career.
Kara Jeffrey, in uniform, holds a basket of goodies during senior night festivities with her family and teammates. Jeffrey was going to take the spring off from sports after long volleyball and basketball seasons, but decided to play soccer with her best friend, Trojan captain Bryanna Popejoy, and hasn't regretted the decision one bit according to the future Cyclone.
