GREENVILLE, Ill. - It just wasn't to be for the Iowa Wesleyan men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at Greenville. The Tigers fought to a scoreless tie for over 88 minutes before Greenville's Juan Jose Herranz scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick to stop IW one game short of a SLIAC title.
The Tiger offense struggled in the first half, getting just six shots, but the defense held Greenville scoreless to send the game into halftime tied 0-0. IW had six shots in the second half, but couldn't find a goal.
The Panthers found themselves in the IW box with less than two minutes showing on the clock, and a foul occurred to set Greenville up for the game-winner. Herranz buried the shot and the Tigers were left with minimal time to try and come back.
Greenville outshot IW 16-9 but both teams finished the game with five shots on goal. Juan Crespo, Eliecer uRENA, fabian Arvizu, Francisco Saldana and Hugo Bonilla each had a shot on goal in the loss. Arvizu's three total shots led the team.
Chris Rimmer was in net again for IW. He finished the game with three saves, turning away everything besides the game-winning penalty kick.
The Tigers ended the year 9-12-1 overall. They were the first IW team to reach the conference tournament since the school became a full-time member this summer.
