WELLMAN — Talk about having a team’s number. The Mid-Prairie football team had opened the last two postseasons with win over Northeast, and on Friday night, the Golden Hawks made it three-straight.
After two years of one-possession wins, Mid-Prairie slashed the Rebels, 49-18, eliminating Northeast and moving on to the next round in the Class 2A playoffs.
“As a staff, we felt very confident,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert. “Our kids felt confident, and that's because they prepared.”
The Golden Hawks were prepared to deliver some big blows in the first quarter, and they wasted no time. Mid-Prairie scored on a picture perfect flea-flicker on the second play of the ballgame.
Running back Hundson Ehrenfelt took the handoff and flipped it back to quarterback Brady Weber. Weber slung the ball to Dylan Henry, who sprung wide-open for a 58-yard score.
“We said up in the gym, the second play, we're running flea-flicker,” Weber said. “It's an energy booster for sure. Hudson did a great job of getting it back to me, and Dylan was wide-open.”
Up 6-0 after the blocked extra point, the Golden Hawks fed Ehrenfelt over and over on the second drive. That culminated in a 5-yard touchdown run on third and goal, and Weber’s two-point run made it 14-0.
“Everything went well,” Ehrenfelt said. “The O-line was pushing. It opened up cutbacks for me. Everybody is moving their feet.”
Mid-Prairie scored once more in the first quarter, as Cobi Hershberger caught a five-yard touchdown pass. The Golden Hawks led 21-0 after one quarter and 33-6 at the half.
Weber slung the ball around all night, completing 11 passes for 162 yards and five touchdowns. Henry led the team with 99 receiving yards, along with his score. Kaden Kos had a touchdown reception. Hershberger had two.
Ehrenfelt rushed for 179 yards and a touchdown, and also caught a touchdown pass. Weber ran for 43 yards and a score.
Kos had eight tackles to pace the Golden Hawks’ defense. Ace Peck and Peyton Fox each had an interception.
Mid-Prairie is now 5-4. The Golden Hawks will play PCM in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs next Friday, with the winner playing either Union, Laporte City or Van Meter for a shot at the dome.
Friday night’s win marked the first career playoff win for Coach Lambert, who took over the football program this year.
“As each week has gone on, we've gotten better,” Lambert said. “I'm just excited for these kids, and excited for the community.”
