Eighth-graders rout Fort Madison

Cam Baumann and Tony Zapata combined for four rushing touchdowns, and the Fairfield eighth-grade football team routed Fort Madison 46-0 in the ?A? game Tuesday.
Baumann racked up 108 yards and two scores on 10 carries and Zapata had 98 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. Michael Fritz added 81 rushing yards with a touchdown, and Brayden Miller gained 31 yards on a pair of rushing attempts. Zapata and Eric Swan also scored on two-point conversion throws.
Defensively, Fritz made six tackles, forced a fumble and had one tackle for a safety to lead the Trojans. Brandon Smithburg had an interception, four tackles and a forced fumble; Zapata returned an interception 61 yards for a touchdown, tallied four tackles and forced a fumble; and Trenton Hanen made five stops. Chris Hanson and Baumann had four tackles apiece, while Kyle Roberts and Josh Osby recorded three each.
The ?B? team picked things up where the ?A? team left off, scoring two touchdowns in a 14-0 victory over two quarters.
Eric Swan, who carried the ball three times for 22 yards, scored a rushing touchdown, and Baily Jones had the other score on a 44-yard touchdown throw from Kleyton Benedict. Benedict finished the game 3-for-5 passing for 55 yards, and Dylan Abbott had two scores for 30 yards with a two-point conversion score.
Brian Buch had a team-high four tackles and Abbott had three. Charles Heisel and Brayden Miller had two stops apiece, while Cameron Burke forced a fumble and Austin Winslow had the recovery.
The eighth-graders travel to Ottumwa to face Evans Middle School next Tuesday.
