The 2024 football season came to an end for the Washington, Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield football teams on Friday night.
Washington 41, Fort Madison 21
The Demons went into Fort Madison needing a win and help from around Class 3A to earn an at-large berth into the 2024 playoffs. Only one of those two things would happen.
Washington did its job, beating Fort Madison by 20 points to keep the Bloodhounds winless on the season, while also moving to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in district play.
Logan McDole gashed the Bloodhounds for 175 rushing yards, while also throwing for 140 yards and four scores.
Four different Demons caught touchdown passes in the win. Kael Williams, Oliver Hobscheidt, Mason Morgan and Jayfred Espinosa all found the end zone through the air. Jude Carter and Summit Keith both scored on the ground.
Unfortunately for the Demons, the RPI math didn’t add up enough to earn a playoff spot, and Washington was forced to settle for six regular season wins, which triples last season’s win total.
Davenport Assumption 35, Mt. Pleasant 0
The Panthers needed a lot to go their way, including an upset win over Assumption, but the Knights had too much firepower, and Mt. Pleasant’s season ended at 4-5 overall and 2-3 in district play.
Zach Newton threw for 63 yards in the loss, while being picked off twice. Ramzy Davis led the running game, with 37 yards, and Payton Walker led the pass catchers with three receptions for 23 yards.
Like the Demons, the Panthers showed huge improvements in 2024. After winning just one game in the last three seasons combined, Mt. Pleasant quadrupled that number in just one year.
“It's due to what these guys have done work wise,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach John Bowlin. “They show up every day, not just during football season. They're there every day year-round.”
Grinnell 45, Fairfield 27
Fairfield played the latest of district juggernauts, competing hard but falling by 17 points.
Voss Richardson threw for 80 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Zandrik Allison rushed for 64 yards and a score. Ethan Bisgard caught four passes for 63 yards and ran for 52 yards and a touchdown, and Richardson found the end zone on the ground.
The Trojans, who competed in a stacked Class 3A District 5, finished 2-7 overall and 1-4 in district play.
