MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant senior thrower Ava English took time in the middle of her busy track and field schedule on Tuesday to sign on to throw at the next level.
English signed with St. Ambrose University, a school that is coming off a Top-40 finish in the NAIA last spring. She is just the latest in a long line of Panther throwers to sign their name on the dotted line.
“I feel very, very lucky,” English said. “I look at everyone else, and I see I have a very talented coaching staff and other athletes that came out of this program that are just amazing.”
English is a former state qualifier in the Class 3A girls shot put, despite coming off a major shoulder injury as an underclassman. After spending time rehabbing her own injury, English decided on her major-to-be, physical therapy.
“With all the physical therapy I had to go through, I said, "I could see myself doing that.,” English said.
English still has a lot ahead of her in the 2025 spring season. The Panthers have begun outdoor activities, and she is ready to make the chase for state again this year. She used the words of throwing coach Shawn Striegel when asked what her goals are for the next couple of months.
“Just keep improving and trust the process,” English said. “Chop wood, carry water.“
