MUSCATINE - A team wants to peak at the end of the season when the postseason arrives. Fairfield's girls bowling team has done that. Tuesday at the Class 1A district tournament in Muscatine, the Trojans achieved a season-high match total while Bailey Hird and Karen Ehret each produced a season-high series score.
The season high match total of 2.386 earned Fairfield a second place team score. Five Trojans finished in the top 15 out of 33 bowlers.
Hird and Ehret rolled their season high two-game series and each posted the same score, 352, which tied them for seventh place overall. Hird started with a 163 then posted a 189. Ehret started slow with a 139 then kicked it up with a 213. The 213 tied for the third-best game of the tournament.
Louisa-Muscatine had the top five individuals and ran away with the team title. Jersey Lessen rolled a 226-246 to win with a 472 series.
The team had only surpassed the 2,300 score twice this season. The first-round score of 1,628 was a season high as was the Game 1 total of 903. The Round 2 total was 758. The Baker games scores were 156, 159, 135, 158, 150.
Other Fairfield scores were the 12th through 14th places of Hope Brammer 150-172-322, McKayla Taylor 167-135-302, Lilly Huff 140-160-300 and Airianna Taylor 144-124-268, who was 20th.
To qualify for the state tournament a team must win at each qualifying site. An at-large entry to state is filled with the second-place team from a qualifier that has the highest score from across the state. Due to the weather, numerous qualifiers were postponed and rolled Thursday. After those results are known, the Trojans will discover if their second-place score is the best of other runners-up.
TEAM SCORES: 1. Louisa-Muscatine 2,994, 2. Fairfield 2,386, 3. Durant 2,293, 4. Davis County 1,900, 5. Sigourney 1,687, 6. West Burlington 1,101
