Fairfield at last spot, Mid-Prairie drops

CEDAR RAPIDS — Fairfield still remained in the Class 2A top 16 when the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association released its sixth weekly rankings for the 2021 boys’ soccer season for all classes: 1A, 2A, and 3A. This is for all games through Saturday, May 8. This week’s rankings will be used to help setup the boys soccer substates.
This is the sixth in a series of weekly rankings that will conclude with the end of the boys high school regular season. There will be a total of eight rankings for 2021.
The Trojans are 16th in the 16-team poll, but Southeast Conference foe Fort Madison climbed to ninth.
Super Conference member Notre Dame lost on penalty kicks to North Scott but remained first in 1A. Mid-Prairie lost consecutive decisions to third-ranked Iowa City Regina and unranked Williamsburg and fell from fifth to 10th.
Golden Hawks unleash Pennington, kicks up 5 scores
Jackson Pennington nearly matched his season scoring total Monday, connecting for scores on 5-of-7 shots on goal during an 8-0 home win over Highland (0-8). He now has 13 total this season.
Gunnar Gingerich, Tobin Miller and Jake Swartzendruber each scored once for Mid-Prairie. Owen Trimpe provided three assists and Tucker Miller one. Swartzendruber and Gingerich supplied one assist each.
Mid-Prairie had 14 shots, six on goal in a 5-0 home loss to No. 5 West Liberty (10-3) Tuesday.
The Hawks play Friday in West Branch (9-1). Mid-Prairie is 8-3.
Hillcrest at .500
The Ravens split a pair of road matches, falling to Central Lee 1-0 Monday and defeating Danville 2-1 Tuesday.
Goalie Aiden Krabill made three crucial saves against Danville in the first half and finished with six.
With 4 minutes left in the half, John Hughes beat a defender and sent the ball across the box for Jorge Canchola to turn into the net.
A Danville penalty kick tied it early in the latter half.
With fifteen minutes left a corner kick bounced out to Eli Ours, who hammered his shot from 20 yards for the 2-1 score.
Hillcrest moves to 5-4 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Hillcrest plays Columbus at Mediapolis at 7 p.m. Friday in the Super Conference tournament.
Columbus has 7-4 record
Gary Molina hit one and Javier Panchillo scored four goals for the Wildcats in a 5-1 win over Danville Friday.
