KEOKUK ? Fairfield took care of business in a rematch with Keokuk Monday and defeated the Southeast Conference rival 2-1 in girls? soccer action.
When the teams met last Thursday in Fairfield, the bounces went the Chiefs? way and ended with a 2-1 loss for the Trojans. This time, Fairfield showed improved poise compared to the teams? previous meeting.
?Overall, the girls played very well. It was very close game, but they held very good composure,? said Fairfield head coach Michiel Hekker.
Claudia Sloat scored first for Fairfield on an assist from Tracy Andermann, who made the pass off a penalty kick in the game?s first 10 minutes. Huma Liptak upped Fairfield?s lead to 2-0 in the second half off an assist from Kayla Septer.
?Kayla made a nice pass from the 50-yard line down to about 30 yards to the goal. Huma made a couple touches to the inside and shot to the second post to make it 2-0,? Hekker said of the play.
The Trojans surrendered one goal in the final 40-minute period but picked up the intensity late to hold on for their sixth win of the season.
Fairfield?s defensive effort, which was led by Tori Keltner, Brandi Rude and Erica Winslow, received a particular boost from goalkeeper Keri Schwarz in the game?s pressure-packed final minutes.
?Keri Schwarz came up really big to get us a couple huge saves. She kept us in the game to give us the win,? Hekker said.
Fairfield (6-6), which also lost 4-0 on Oskaloosa?s turf field last Friday, returns home for the regular season finale vs. Washington on Thursday. The varsity game will kick off the senior night festivities at 5:30 p.m.
