Fairfield baseball blistered by Burlington
Trojans bested by Grayhounds after five innings

BURLINGTON — Fairfield struggled on the baseball field Monday night on the road in a doubleheader against Southeast Conference leader Burlington.
The Trojans kept the game tight knit for two innings, but the Grayhounds bats came alive the rest of the way out to down the Trojans in five innings, 15-3. Rain ended the second game of the series prematurely in the third inning. Burlington led Fairfield 4-2 at the time of the game's suspension.
After a scoreless first inning, both the Trojans and Grayhounds got on the board in the second.
The Trojans brought one run across the plate in the top of the second, but Burlington answered back in the bottom of the inning.
With Brad Woodburn on the hill, the Trojans got a fly out and strikeout out following a Burlington single at the bottom of the second. Following another single, Burlington struck with a two out two run RBI double to make it 2-1.
In the top of the third, Fairfield went three up three down.
Burlington’s bats caught fire in the bottom of third. The Grayhound put up three two run RBI doubles and a two-run homer during the inning. By its end, Burlington had brought a total of 12 run across home plate to take full control of the game, 14-1.
Fairfield got two runs back in the fourth, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Grayhounds added one run themselves. Following a scoreless top of the fifth, Burlington took the SEC victory.
Fairfield tallied five hits in the game. Nate Smithburg went 2-3 in the loss. Brad Woodburn and Dylan Hunter both went 1-2. Chandler Pumphrey went 1-1 with an RBI.
Brad Woodburn took the loss on the mound. He pitched two innings, giving up seven hits, eight runs, two walks and a strikeout.
Landon Nodurft and Evan Haines also pitched an inning.
