FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield baseball team continued its strong run in Southeast Conference play Monday night, picking up a dominant 11-0 win and a gritty 5-4 victory in a doubleheader sweep of Fort Madison.
With the pair of victories, the Trojans improve to 15-7 overall and 9-2 in the SEC, solidifying their second-place standing behind league leader Burlington.
The opener was all Fairfield from the start, as the Trojans cruised to a shutout victory in just four and a half innings. They scored in four consecutive frames while keeping the Bloodhounds off the board throughout.
Archer Kreuter and Aiden Westercamp got things going in the first inning, each delivering RBI singles to bring home Dain Burkhart and Luke Konczal, who had reached on walks.
The offense kept rolling from there. In the second, Voss Richardson doubled with one out and came home on an RBI single from Dayson Workman. RBIs by Westercamp and Richardson in the third pushed the lead to 5-0, and Fort Madison never mounted a response.
The Trojans’ defense was just as impressive. They allowed the Bloodhounds into scoring position only twice, once in the first and again in the fifth. Burkhart was lights-out on the mound, throwing only 43 pitches (36 for strikes), giving up just two hits, and striking out two.
Fairfield broke the game wide open in the fourth with a six-run eruption. Fort Madison’s pitching faltered as six straight Trojans reached on walks, with Workman and Burkhart scoring on wild pitches.
Ethan Bisgard drew an RBI walk to score Konczal, and Jacob Crew followed with a two-RBI single to plate Kreuter and Westercamp. Richardson capped the scoring with an RBI groundout that brought in Bisgard, sealing the 11-0 win.
Game two was a much tighter affair. Fort Madison struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after a steal of home. But Fairfield answered quickly. With two outs in the bottom half, Westercamp ripped a two-RBI double to left field, bringing home Workman and Konczal.
Fairfield added to its lead in the second as Chase Countryman singled in Crew, making it 3-1.
After a quiet third inning, Fort Madison rallied in the fourth. An error and a pair of base hits loaded the bases with one out, and the Bloodhounds capitalized. RBI singles by Hunter Cook and Mike Fouse, along with a run scored on a Fairfield error, put Fort Madison ahead 4-3.
The Trojans responded in the fifth. Bisgard reached third after two stolen bases, and Workman knocked him in with a clutch RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.
The deadlock held through the sixth and seventh, forcing extra innings. Richardson led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, and after a walk and single loaded the bases, Konczal stepped up and drew a walk-off walk to win it for Fairfield.
