BURLINGTON - It wasn’t meant to be for the Fairfield baseball team in a Southeast Conference doubleheader at Burlington on Monday. The Trojans lost two games, falling 12-2(6) in Game 1, and 9-4 in Game 2.
Game 1 opened with a bang for the visiting Trojans. Brad Smithburg launched a two-run homerun, scoring Nate Smithburg to put the team up 2-0. Unfortunately for Fairfield, that’s all they would score in the opener.
Burlington scored three runs in the first, six in the second, two in the third and one in the sixth to end the game one-inning early via the 10-run rule.
Fairfield had another early lead in Game 2, scoring one run in the first inning. Burlington would put up the next nine to lead 9-1. Fairfield cut it to a five-run game with three in the seventh.
Nate Woodburn went 1-for-4 with two RBIs in Game 2. Brad Smithburg and Brad Woodburn each knocked in one run, and Connor Lyons had two hits.
Lyons took the loss on the mound in Game 1. Brad Smithburg was tagged with the Game 2 loss.
Fairfield is now 7-12 overall and 5-7 in the SEC.
