FORT MADISON - Fairfield couldn’t put a dent in the No. 10 (3A) Fort Madison bloodhounds on Wednesday night. The Trojans struggled offensively all night and lost both ends of a Southeast Conference doubleheader, falling 9-1 and 5-0.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the second inning of Game 1, the Trojans tied the game up when Evan Haines knocked in Brad Woodburn with an RBI single.
That was all the Trojans could muster against Fort Madison pitcher Kane Williams, who threw a complete game. The Bloodhounds would score three more runs in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Woodburn went 2-for-2 for Fairfield in Game 1. Nate Smithburg went 1-for-2 with a double. Kevin Kretz was 1-for-1, and Haines finished 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Isaac Harris took the loss on the mound for Fairfield. He gave up five runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks, while striking out three batters.
Nate Woodburn threw a complete game for Fairfield in Game 2, and he did hold the Bloodhounds to just five runs. Fort Madison scored two runs in the first inning, two in the second and one in the sixth.
Fairfield’s offense, however, couldn’t get going. The Trojans had just five hits. Brody Angstead went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles to lead the team.
