KEOKUK — The Fairfield baseball team needed to pick up a road win in Keokuk on Monday night if they wanted to earn second place in the Southeast Conference alone, and that’s just what the Trojans did.
Fairfield waltzed into Keokuk and blanked the Chiefs for the second-straight game, winning 6-0 to complete the regular-season sweep.
The Trojans jumped on Keokuk early, scoring three runs in the first inning. That would be all Fairfield would need to win, but the Trojans put up one more in the fourth and add two more in the sixth.
Fairfield used a trifecta of pitchers to throw a combined two-hitter on the mound. Tate Allen earned the win, starting the game and giving up just one hit and two walks, while hitting one batter over two innings.
Dain Burkhart threw the most innings, pitching three frames. He gave up just one hit and one walk. Tallon Bates hit one batter but gave up no hits or walks over two frames.
The trio struck out seven batters on the day. Burkhart and Bates each had three strikeouts to lead the way.
At the plate, Allen had a monster day, going 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Burkhart went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Bates and Caden Allison each knocked in a run, and Landon Nodurft had a pair of hits.
The win moved Fairfield to 15-17 overall on the year and 9-6 in conference play. That put them one game above Mt. Pleasant in the SEC standings.
