The Ottumwa baseball team broke loose for 11 runs in the second inning Friday en route to a 15-2 win over Fairfield. The loss was the second straight to open the season for the Trojans.
The visiting Bulldogs, who led 3-1 after the first inning, took advantage of some wild pitches and a three-run home run from Collin Schulz in the second to build a 14-1 lead early. Starter Bryce Ward held Fairfield to five hits as Ottumwa clinched the shortened, five-inning win.
Fairfield starter Spencer Peterman struggled with his location and was unable to get out of the second inning. The senior was tagged with seven earned runs in one inning to receive the loss. In relief of Peterman, Wyatt Stark allowed three runs in two innings, and Darrin Dimmitt allowed one run in the final two innings.
Regardless of the final score, Allison saw several positives from his group, especially from the batter?s box.
?Josh Dimmitt was seeing the baseball well tonight and putting a good swing on the ball. Narendra had a really great at-bat and drove a nice line drive to right center field,? Allison said. ?Several other guys were taking good at-bats but not getting the results they were looking for.?
Josh Dimmitt finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, and Martin was 1-for-1 with an RBI double in the fourth inning. Joe Hietpas and Austin Gridley also had one hit apiece for Fairfield.
Also for Fairfield, Mason Ellis drew an RBI walk to score Tyler Cooksey in the bottom of the first.
Allison added he remains hopeful the hits will start falling more frequently for his team.
?Baseball is a game where you might hit a solid line drive right at the defense for an out, and next time up take a bad swing but bloop it over the second baseman. We?re trying to control what we can control with our process, move on from failures and be ready for the next pitch. Once we are able to focus on process, success will come for this group.?
Next up for the Trojans (0-2) is a home game vs. Chariton Wednesday.
