It was a busy weekend for the Fairfield baseball team. Fairfield went 2-1 against three area squads, including two from the Union coverage area.
Fairfield beat Pekin in an 8-7 thriller on Thursday night in Packwood. The Trojans followed that two games at the Davis County Varsity Classic, beating the hosting Mustangs 10-6 before falling 10-7 to a red-hot Van Buren County team.
In the Trojans’ win on Thursday, Fairfield had to come back from an early 3-0 deficit. The Trojans scored two runs in the second inning and five in the third to grab a 7-3 lead midway through the game.
Fairfield’s lead was down to 8-5 before the final inning, when Pekin made a big run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Panthers loaded the bases with one out after a hit-by-pitch, a single and a walk. Will Adam delivered a monster blow to the Trojans, scoring two runners on a two-run single.
Cade Parmenter gave Pekin even more life by drawing a walk to load up the bases, but Caden Allison came in for Fairfield and struck the final two batters out to stop the rally and help the Trojans escape.
Fairfield’s Landon Nodurft had a big game, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs to lead Fairfield. Isaac Harris was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs as well, and Dain Burkhart earned the win on the mound, giving up just two runs (one earned) over five innings.
Adam finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Pekin. JaeDon Wolver was 1-for-2 with an RBI of his own.
Pekin’s Koy Pollock was tagged with the loss on the mound, giving up seven runs (vfive earned) over 2.2 innings of work.
The Trojans’ offense was alive and well at the Davis County Invite. Against the Mustangs, Fairfield and Davis County went into the seventh inning tied 5-5, but the Trojans plated five runs in the top of the last frame to run away with the game.
Aidan Krueter went 1-for-3 with three RBIs for Fairfield in that game. He also picked up the win on the mound, giving up eight runs (six earned) over six innings.
Burkhart and Allison both collected two hits, and Burkhart scored three times.
The Trojans were put to the test later that day against Van Buren County. VBC rallied from a 7-0 deficit, scoring 10 runs in their final four at-bats to steal the win.
VBC’s Jackson Manning had a big day, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. He also picked up the save on the mound, throwing two shutout innings in relief.
Also for the Warriors, Lucas Fett was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Anthony Duncan went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Dylan Richardson earned the win on the mound, giving up just two earned runs over 3.67 innings.
Fairfield’s Burkhart was 3-for-4 with an RBI against VBC. Cody Birlson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Harris was tagged with the loss on the mound, giving up three runs (two earned) over 1.2 innings, and Nate CKonczal threw four innings, giving up five runs (two earned).
