FORT MADISON — Fairfield baseball played two thrillers in back-to-back days, taking a one-run Southeast Conference victory on Thursday before falling by one in a shootout on Friday.
On Thursday, the Trojans moved to 3-0 in conference play with a 2-1 victory in Fort Madison. Mid-Prairie edged Fairfield 12-11 on an eighth-inning walk-off one night later.
In Fort Madison, Fairfield’s Carson Elmore was rock solid on the mound, starting the game and going five shutout innings. He gave up his first run in the sixth before being replaced by reliever Dayson Workman, and ended up getting the win, striking out seven batters in the process.
The Trojans took the lead when Luke Konczal lead the fourth inning off with a home run to left-center field. Fairfield added one in the fifth on a run by Archer Kreuter, who walked to leadoff the inning and came around to score.
The Trojans only had two hits in the win. Cason Miller had the other knock, besides Konczal’s homer.
One night later, the Trojans took Mid-Prairie to extra innings, where Golden Hawk junior Gentry Bontrrager hit into a Trojan error to bring in the game-winning run.
Mid-Prairie had went into the bottom of the seventh inning down two runs. The Golden Hawks tied things up with a two-run frame, and then responded to one Trojan run in the eighth with two of their own.
Mid-Prairie’s Tatem Telfer was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Brooks Weber was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Cash Brown finished with two hits and an RBI as well.
Fairfield’s Kreueter went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs in the loss at Mid-Prairie. Voss Richardson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Konczal finished with two hits and an RBI.
