BLOOMFIELD ? The Fairfield baseball team closed the first week of the season with its first win during the Davis County Classic in Bloomfield Saturday.
The Trojans topped Keokuk 9-1 but fell to top-ranked Davis County (Class 2A) 12-0.
Against Keokuk, Trojan senior Corbin Harwood (1-0) earned the victory, allowing just one run in the six-inning start. The Chiefs had four hits and two walks against Harwood, who fanned 11 batters.
?It was good to have Corbin throw really well against Keokuk,? said Fairfield head coach Josh Allison. ?He was hitting location and changing speeds, doing a great job of mixing it up.?
Brent Buch got Fairfield going in the game?s first at-bat with a solo homer. Jake Mineart hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, and Darrin Dimmitt had two RBI off two singles. Josh Dimmitt was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
In the second contest, the Trojans were held to just one hit against Davis County and starting pitcher Josey Garmon.
Buch had the base knock as well as a walk, and Darrin Dimmitt and Jordan Whitney also earned a free pass.
?We couldn?t get much going offensively,? said Allison. ?I am glad we had the opportunity to play them, and hopefully the experience we gained from playing one of the best teams in the state will help us later in the season.?
Spencer Peterman started the game for Fairfield and allowed eight runs ? seven earned ? in 2 2/3 innings of work. The junior struck out three. In relief, Darrin Dimmitt allowed no runs in 2/3 innings and Austin Gridley allowed four runs ? none earned ? in 1 2/3 innings. The Mustangs accumulated 10 hits in the game.
The Trojans? record stands at 1-4 after opening week, and the team is set to visit Chariton Wednesday.
?Our record after one week of play isn?t what I thought we would be at, but I do believe we improved this week,? said Allison. ?Some of the questions we had going into the season are starting to work themselves out and some of our younger guys are proving they are ready to compete at the varsity level.?
