Keokuk was hitting on all cylinders to hand Fairfield a season-opening loss in December, but the Trojans found their groove Saturday to avenge the loss and pick up another win.
The boys? squad ran away from Keokuk in the round two baker games to win its second meet of the year by a final score of 2479-2344. The JV boys? team also won by a score of 2048-1956.
The girls? team, however, couldn?t build on last week?s win vs. Washington and fell to the Chiefs 2473-2304.
In the boys? match, Fairfield held a 36-pin lead following round one, but won each of the five Baker games to gain another 99 pins. During the Baker games, 40 of the 50 frames were marked to pave the way for the big win.
?It wasn?t a stellar performance in the opening games, but the boys were able to start marking in the baker games, and that was the determining factor in the meet,? said head coach Lisa Greenig.
The Trojans came up with four games above 175 in round two including a high game of 206.
In round one, Jeff Keller was back as the No. 1 bowler with a two-game series score of 383 that included the day?s highest game of 223. Gabe and Ben Hull also rolled a 300 series with a 338 and 334, respectively. Mitch Goudy?s 292 and Jake Kessel?s 245 completed the team score in round one.
The tables were turned on Fairfield in the girls? match, and it was Keokuk that ran away in round two. The Chiefs outscored Fairfield in four of the five baker games to take the match.
?The girls battled 12 splits in game one, but improved and knocked it down to five splits in game two,? Greenig said. ?The girls did a good job of getting a good pin count on spares, which is something we?ve been working on, but just weren?t able to get any momentum during the baker games.?
Amanda Chatfield led Fairfield in round one with a two-game series score of 342 followed by sister Alyssa Chatfield with a 322 and Sam Ruckman with a 307.
Fairfield now has a non-conference match tonight at Louisa-Muscatine before heading back into the usual Saturday routine this weekend at Mount Pleasant.
