FAIRFIELD — Fairfield boys basketball had a tough start to the week on Monday as the Trojans were defeated by the Blue Demons of Albia 68-59.
It’s been a tough stretch of games for Fairfield as the loss marks their 15th straight. The Trojans have played some great games, but just haven’t been able to get over the hump.
On Monday, the Trojans were right there once again, but came up just short late.
Things didn’t start out on the best note for Fairfield. Albia opened the game with nine straight points and they would never trail.
Scoring woes plagued the Trojans in the first period as their first bucket came from the stripe just over three minutes into the game and by that time Albia held a 9-1 advantage.
Fairfield closed the quarter on a 5-2 run, but Albia led 17-8 after eight minutes.
In the second, Fairfield struggled to find its shot once again. Riley Perkins hit a two at the 6:18 mark to make it a nine point game, 19-10, but over the next minute and a half Albia extended it’s lead to 13.
The lead only grew from there at Albia outscored Fairfield 14-11 to the halftime whistle, that included a layin at the buzzer which pushed it to 36-21.
What offense they couldn’t find in the first half was found in the second, but it wouldn’t be enough.
Fairfield went on to outscore Albia in the third 18-15 to make it 51-39. They continued that trend into the fourth as a 20-17 final frame cut into the Blue Demons lead even more, but it wasn’t enough to get out in front.
Sam Weaton led the Trojans with 16 points. Riley Perkins tallied 15 points and Cooper Polonsky had 12. Other scorers for Fairifeld were Ben Boatright with six, Luke Konczal with five, Eli Zillman with three and Ethan Bisgard with two.
With the loss, Fairfield drops to 1-15 on the season.
