Fairfield boys complete indoor races in Pella

The Fairfield boys? track team closed out its scheduled indoor track meets Friday by competing on the Central College campus in Pella against more than 30 other schools.

Senior Austin Francisco made his mark on the event by making the finals in the 55-meter hurdles and placing ninth with the time of 8.19. Sprinters Dakota Nye and Zach Martin were able to crack the top 10 in their events as well. Plenty of Class 4A schools, such as Iowa City West, were racing against the Trojans, which means these results point to a promising upcoming season (Fairfield is in Class 3A)

?It?s tough to win at a meet like that,? Fairfield coach Brian Dunlap said. ?Anytime you place in the 10-20 range you?re doing pretty well.?

Jonathan Hoehne led the way for the Trojans in the 55-meter dash with the time of 6.81. Dakota Nye and LaQuan Hill were not far behind. Distance runner Nathan Haerr improved his 800-meter and 1600-meter times.

Weather has made practicing outside difficult, so Friday was one of the first times the team could practice the long jump. Hill jumped the furthest for the Trojans and placed 20th overall.

Dunlap is hoping the weather doesn?t prove to be a factor Thursday when the Trojans travel to Washington for the first outdoor meet of the season.
